Saynshand is the capital of Dornogovi province in southeastern Mongolia. It lies on the Trans-Mongolian Railway between Ulaanbaatar and the Chinese border. On a map, the railway is the only long line for miles. The town forms a compact grid of blocks beside it, and ger districts of fenced plots spread out at the edges.
Outside the town, the Gobi takes over. Tracks run in several directions across open gravel plains, with almost no other features. South of the town is Khamaryn Khiid, a monastery associated with the nineteenth-century lama and poet Danzanravjaa, and it draws pilgrims from across the country.
