Seville lies on the Guadalquivir in the flat Andalusian lowlands. The river splits into two courses here: the Canal de Alfonso XIII, which passes the old town, and the main channel to the west, with La Cartuja island between them. East of the water, the historic centre is one of the largest in Europe, a knot of narrow, winding streets that barely follows any grid.
The cathedral, among the largest Gothic churches in the world, rises beside the Giralda tower, once the minaret of an Almohad mosque. Next to it is the Real Alcázar palace. To the south, Plaza de España curves around the edge of María Luisa Park, and La Cartuja hosted the 1992 Universal Exposition.
