Shardara is in Turkistan region, in southern Kazakhstan, on the Syr Darya river near the border with Uzbekistan. It is best known for the Shardara Reservoir, a large body of water formed by a dam built in the Soviet period. From above, the town is a fairly regular grid of streets next to the dam and the river below it.
The reservoir dominates the map. It is a broad, irregular expanse of water that dwarfs the town. Below the dam, the Syr Darya continues northwest across the dry steppe, and irrigation canals carry its water out to surrounding fields that stand out against the arid land.
