Shefar‘am sits on a series of hills in the Lower Galilee, looking west toward Haifa Bay and the Mediterranean coastal plain. On a map, the town's streets curve around the hillsides, with the densest part gathered near the top, where the old town and its fortress stand.
The fortress was built in the eighteenth century under Zahir al-Umar, who ruled much of Galilee at the time. Shefar‘am has a long history as a mixed town, with Muslim, Christian and Druze communities living side by side, and its churches, mosques and Druze shrine reflect that shared past.
