This Shima lies in southern Fujian, in the Longhai area near Zhangzhou. It sits on the lower Jiulong River, which widens here before reaching the sea near Xiamen. On a map the town stretches along the riverbank. Streets run parallel to the water and back into the flat farmland of the delta, and channels and embankments divide the surrounding fields.
The Jiulong River plain is among the most fertile and densely settled areas of Fujian, long known for fruit growing and farming. Shima's position near the river mouth has tied it closely to Zhangzhou and to the coastal economy around Xiamen, and newer districts have grown alongside the older riverside streets.
