Shinjō Map Poster & Print
Shinjō is a city in the north of Yamagata Prefecture, set in a basin surrounded by mountains in the upper Mogami River region. It is known as one of the snowiest cities in Japan, and in winter the landscape is covered for months. On a map the city appears as a compact urban area surrounded by rice fields and the rising edges of the hills.
The former Shinjō Castle, seat of the Tozawa clan, is now Mogami Park, a moated square near the centre. Shinjō Station is the northern terminus of the Yamagata Shinkansen, and several regional lines meet here. Each summer the Shinjō Matsuri fills the streets with elaborate floats, a festival with a history of more than two hundred and fifty years.
A Shinjō map poster shows a castle town in a mountain basin: the regular streets of the centre, the squared outline of the park, rail lines converging on the station and the fields spreading out toward the hills. The contrast between the dense centre and the open basin gives the print its balance.

Rail terminus
Tracks from several directions meet at Shinjō Station, the end of the Yamagata Shinkansen, drawing smooth lines across the basin toward the town.
Basin fields
Rice fields fill the flat land around the city, forming a fine grid that stretches toward the surrounding mountains.
