Shitan is a town in western Chongqing municipality, in the undulating hill country north of the city centre. The land here is made up of low ridges and shallow valleys, most of it farmed in small terraces. The town is a fairly compact cluster of streets, the local market and administrative centre for the villages around it.
On a map, the hills set the layout. Roads follow the ridges or thread through the valleys, bending often and rarely running straight for long. Reservoirs and ponds fill some of the low ground, appearing as irregular shapes among the fields. Farmhouses and small hamlets are scattered across the slopes, linked to the town by thin, winding lanes.
