Sibolga faces the Indian Ocean from the west coast of North Sumatra, on the shore of Tapian Nauli Bay. The land behind it rises steeply almost immediately. On a map the town is a thin ribbon of streets squeezed between the water and the hills, several blocks deep in places and just a single road wide in others.
The bay shapes everything. Its curving shoreline sets the line of the main streets, and small islands lie offshore in the sheltered water. Sibolga has long been a fishing and trading port, and harbours and landing points line the waterfront. Roads climb out of town into the hills toward the inland highlands of North Sumatra.
