Sirdaryo is in Uzbekistan's Sirdaryo Region, named after the Syr Darya, one of Central Asia's major rivers. The land here is very flat. From above, the town shows a fairly regular pattern of streets, and beyond it the countryside is divided into rectangular fields by irrigation canals and farm roads.
Much of this region belongs to the plain once called the Hunger Steppe, which was turned into farmland during the twentieth century through large irrigation projects.
