Skalica is in the far west of Slovakia, close to the Czech border and the Morava River. Its map has a clearly legible historic core, a tight ring of streets and squares that follows the line of the old town fortifications, with newer districts spreading out to the south and east.
The town is known for the Romanesque rotunda of St George, one of the oldest buildings in the region, and for the Skalický trdelník, a pastry protected by a European geographical indication. The surrounding hills are planted with vineyards, and wine has long been part of local life.
