Sokółka is in the Podlaskie Voivodeship of north-eastern Poland, north-east of Białystok and close to the border with Belarus. The town has a traditional plan: a central market square with streets leading out from it, surrounded by newer districts and then the open farmland and forests of Podlasie.
Sokółka became widely known in 2008 for a reported Eucharistic miracle at the parish church, which now draws pilgrims. The surrounding county is also known for its Tatar heritage, with historic wooden mosques in the nearby villages of Bohoniki and Kruszyniany, a rare feature in Poland.
