Songgang is a subdistrict of Bao'an in northern Shenzhen, close to the boundary with Dongguan. It is part of the industrial belt that grew up in the Pearl River Delta in the decades after Shenzhen became a special economic zone. On the map, the area is a tightly packed mix of factory compounds, worker housing, urban villages and newer residential towers.
The street pattern shows how quickly the area developed. Large rectangular industrial plots sit beside tangled lanes that follow older village boundaries. Main roads and expressways run through, and low green hills and reservoirs break up the urban fabric in places.
