Sortavala lies in Karelia on the northern shore of Lake Ladoga, Europe's largest lake. The shoreline here is broken into bays, skerries and rocky islands, and the town wraps around a deep inlet. From above, the streets bend around granite hills and water, so the plan feels irregular and closely tied to the landscape.
Before the Second World War the town belonged to Finland, and it still has buildings from that period, including Finnish National Romantic and Nordic Classicist architecture. Today it is the main starting point for trips to the Valaam archipelago and its monastery, reached by boat across the lake.
