South El Monte is a small city in Los Angeles County, in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. It lies just south of El Monte and north of the Whittier Narrows. From above, it is a mix of fairly regular residential grids and larger industrial blocks, which cover a big share of its land.
Its edges are clearly defined. The Pomona Freeway, State Route 60, runs through the south of the city. The Rio Hondo channel runs along the western side, and the San Gabriel River is a short distance to the east. To the south, the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area opens up a wide expanse of parkland, lakes and flood basin.
