Stanford University Map Poster & Print
Stanford University covers a large stretch of land beside Palo Alto, and from above its plan is unusually clear. Palm Drive runs in a straight line from El Camino Real to the Oval, a broad lawn that opens onto the Main Quad. Around this axis, the academic buildings form a pattern of arcaded courtyards, with the rest of the campus spreading out in looser blocks.
Founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their son, the university was laid out on their former stock farm, which is why it is still known as the Farm. Frederick Law Olmsted helped shape the plan. Hoover Tower rises near the Main Quad, and in the foothills to the south the radio telescope known as the Dish is a landmark for walkers.
A Stanford University map poster shows the contrast between the formal centre and the wide open land around it: the long line of Palm Drive, the arcaded quads, the stadium and athletic fields, and the foothills behind with their trails. It is a spacious map, with plenty of room between buildings.

Main Quad
Sandstone buildings with red tile roofs and long arcades form a set of courtyards around Memorial Church. From above, the quad is a crisp rectangle of repeating shapes.
Foothills and the Dish
Beyond the academic core, open hills and trails rise to the south, where the radio telescope known as the Dish stands on the slope above the campus.
