Starogard Gdański lies in Pomerania, south of Gdańsk, on the Wierzyca river. It is considered the main town of Kociewie, a region with its own dialect and traditions. From above, the old town is a compact oval of streets around a market square, with the river valley running nearby and newer districts spreading outward.
The town has medieval origins, and parts of its defensive walls and towers survive around the historic core. Today it is also known as the home of Polpharma, one of Poland's large pharmaceutical companies, whose industrial site is part of the modern town.
