Svobody lies on the outskirts of Pyatigorsk in Stavropol Krai, part of the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. From above, it is a residential area of straight and gently curving streets, private houses with gardens and some larger blocks, spreading out from the main roads into the city.
The landscape around it is defined by isolated mountains rising from the plain. Mount Mashuk stands over Pyatigorsk, and Beshtau, the highest of the local peaks, rises to the north-west. On the map these appear as areas of winding roads and open slopes that contrast with the regular streets below.
