Taiobeiras lies in the north of Minas Gerais, a region of dry plateaus, cerrado vegetation and long distances between towns. From above, the town is a compact patch of streets surrounded by farmland and scrub. It has no large river or coastline to shape it, so the plan is set mainly by roads and by the gentle slope of the land.
The centre follows a fairly regular layout of blocks around a main square and church. Newer neighbourhoods have grown outward along the roads that leave town. A regional highway runs past, and it is the town's main link to the rest of the state and to Bahia further north.
