Tajerouine is a town in the Kef Governorate of north-western Tunisia, in the high country close to the border with Algeria. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on rising ground, with roads leading out across plateaus and between rocky ridges.
The surrounding landscape is one of the most dramatic in Tunisia. Not far away rises the Table de Jugurtha, a flat-topped mountain with steep cliffs that has served as a natural fortress since antiquity. The area also has a long history of mining, which shaped local settlement and transport.
