Tanzhou is a town in the south of Zhongshan, in Guangdong province, near the border with Zhuhai. It lies on the low, flat land of the Pearl River Delta, where rivers and drainage channels cross the landscape in every direction. From above, the map shows a patchwork of water, cultivated plots and built-up areas, stitched together by roads.
Like many towns in the delta, Tanzhou has grown quickly with industry and new housing. Planned blocks, broad roads and large factory sites sit alongside older village settlements and narrow waterways. The result is a layered map, with clean modern layouts next to the irregular shapes of farmland and fish ponds that still cover parts of the region.
