Tepalcatepec lies in the Tierra Caliente of Michoacán, a low, hot region of broad valleys between mountain ranges. The town is close to the border with Jalisco. On the map, its centre is a grid of blocks laid out from a central plaza, in the usual pattern of Mexican towns.
The Tepalcatepec River, which gives its name to a wider basin, runs through the region. Irrigated land and pasture appear around the town, and the surrounding terrain rises toward rougher ground. Roads cross the valley toward other towns, and the edges of the map loosen into rural tracks.
