Ternate is a coastal municipality in Cavite, on the southern side of the entrance to Manila Bay. From above, the town centre is a small cluster of streets along the shore. Behind it the land rises quickly into forested hills, and a few roads climb and curve towards the neighbouring towns and the beach coves to the west.
The coastline is the dominant line. It bends around small bays and headlands, with Corregidor island lying offshore. Inland, the network gets sparse, with winding hill roads replacing the tighter streets of the centre. Much of the municipality stays green, with only a light web of paths.
Ternate is named after the island of Ternate in the Moluccas. Families brought from there by the Spanish in the seventeenth century settled here, and a local variety of Chavacano, a Spanish-based creole, is still spoken. A Ternate map poster places that unusual history on a quiet stretch of coast.
