Teyateyaneng, often shortened to TY, is the capital of Berea District in the lowlands of western Lesotho, north of Maseru. The town spreads along rolling high ground, with the main road north passing through the town and smaller roads branching off into villages and farmland.
TY is known as a crafts centre, especially for hand-woven tapestries and rugs made from mohair and wool. Weaving workshops in the town have produced these pieces for decades, and they are sold across southern Africa and beyond.
A Teyateyaneng map poster shows a town without a rigid plan. A few main roads form the framework, and the neighbourhoods fill the spaces between them in loose clusters, with irregular tracks that follow the gentle slopes. At the edges, the lines thin out into the open countryside of the lowlands.
