Thamaga lies in the Kweneng District, a short drive west of Gaborone. From above, it reads as a loose, open settlement: a network of sandy tracks and a few paved roads link hundreds of homestead plots scattered across gently rolling ground. Low rocky hills rise around the village, and their contours break up the otherwise even spread of yards.
Unlike a gridded town, Thamaga grew around wards and family compounds, so its roads follow the land and the old footpaths. The main tarred road passes through and gathers a small commercial centre along it. Away from that line, the pattern loosens into curving tracks and the scrub and grazing land of eastern Botswana.
Thamaga is known across the country for its pottery tradition, and locally made ceramics are sold in and beyond Gaborone. A Thamaga map poster shows the village the way its residents know it: a wide, unhurried pattern of tracks and plots held in place by the surrounding hills.
