The Dalles sits on the south bank of the Columbia River in northern Oregon, at the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge, where the forested western landscape gives way to open, dry hills. Downtown lies close to the river, and residential streets climb the bluffs behind it in a regular grid.
For travelers on the Oregon Trail, The Dalles was a key point where many left the overland route and took to the river. Today the Columbia here is shaped by The Dalles Dam, whose long structure crosses the river just upstream of town.
