Thohoyandou lies in the far north of South Africa, in the Vhembe district of Limpopo, in hilly country south of the Soutpansberg range. The land is greener and more rolling than much of the province, and the map shows roads that curve around hillsides instead of running in straight lines.
The town was established as the administrative capital of the former Venda homeland, which explains its mix of a planned central area and looser surrounding settlements. Government buildings, commercial streets and institutions cluster in the centre, while residential areas spread outward across the slopes.
