Thonon-les-Bains is on the southern shore of Lake Geneva in Haute-Savoie, the main town of the Chablais. The lake is its defining feature on a map: a large, smooth expanse that fills the northern edge of any composition. The town sits on a terrace above the water, with the old centre on the upper level and the port of Rives at the foot of the slope.
A funicular links the upper town to the harbour, and a network of switchback roads and stairways handles the same drop. To the east, the Dranse river reaches the lake through a broad delta that is now a nature reserve, leaving a wide, textured shape on the shoreline. Along the water to the west lie parks and the grounds of the Château de Ripaille.
