Tikhvin lies in the east of Leningrad Oblast, on the small Tikhvinka River. The Tikhvin Assumption Monastery, founded in the sixteenth century, is home to the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God, one of the most revered icons in Russia. The town is also the birthplace of the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, whose family house is now a museum.
