Tire lies in İzmir province, on the southern edge of the Küçük Menderes valley, where the flat plain meets the hills behind the town. From above, the older streets climb and twist on the lower slopes, while newer neighbourhoods and farmland spread across the level ground to the north.
The town has many Ottoman-era mosques, baths and inns, reflecting its long importance as a trade and crafts centre. It is especially known for its large Tuesday market, which draws people from all over the region, and for traditional crafts such as felt-making.
