Trenggalek is the seat of Trenggalek Regency in southern East Java, in the hilly country between the island's central volcanic spine and the Indian Ocean. The town itself lies inland, on a valley floor surrounded by hills, while the regency reaches south to a rugged coastline of bays and headlands.
