The river junction
The meeting of the Kasai and Tshikapa rivers is the organising point of the map: a clear Y-shaped junction of water that the town has grown around on all sides.

Tshikapa Map Poster & Print
Tshikapa grew where the Tshikapa River flows into the Kasai, one of the great tributaries of the Congo. On the map the two rivers form a clear junction, and the town spreads out from it across the open plateau in a loose, sprawling network of streets. Neighbourhoods sit on both sides of the water, linked by a few crossings.
Diamonds drove the town's growth. Alluvial deposits along the Kasai and its tributaries drew miners from across the region throughout the twentieth century, and small-scale digging still shapes the riverbanks. Tshikapa is now the capital of Kasai province and one of the larger towns in the interior of the Congo basin.
A Tshikapa map poster is really a portrait of two rivers. Their curves anchor the composition, while the streets around them look open and informal, thinning out into savanna at the edges. The map has no single grand centre, and that is exactly what makes it distinctive on a wall.

The broad Kasai
The Kasai is wide at Tshikapa, and its broad band of water gives the map a heavy, confident line that the lighter street network plays against.
Sprawling edges
Beyond the centre, streets spread over the plateau in a loose, irregular pattern. They thin gradually into open land, giving the poster soft, fading edges.

ለምን Tshikapa
ትርጉም ያለው ካርታ
For families from Kasai living elsewhere in Congo or abroad, Tshikapa rarely appears in print. A map poster gives it a place on the wall and turns a town usually described only by its diamonds into a calm, graphic image of home.
