Udgīr lies in Latur district, in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, on the dry, level Deccan plateau. From above, the older part of town is a close grain of narrow lanes around the fort and bazaar area. Newer neighbourhoods open out beyond it along the roads and the railway line in straighter, more widely spaced blocks.
The town is best known for Udgir Fort and for the Battle of Udgir in 1760, when Maratha forces defeated the army of the Nizam of Hyderabad. The fort's outline, with its walls and moat, remains a clear historical anchor within the modern street plan.
