Valenzano lies a short distance inland from Bari, on the gently rising plain that stretches back from the Adriatic coast of Apulia. On a map the town is compact: a small historic centre with narrow, irregular streets, surrounded by a more regular ring of newer blocks, then an abrupt edge where the farmland begins.
That farmland defines the surroundings. Olive groves, orchards and dry-stone walls split the land into small parcels, and country lanes cut straight lines between them.
