Velingrad lies in the western Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, in the Chepino valley at an altitude of around 750 metres. From above, the town forms a long, narrow shape following the valley floor, with the Chepinska river running through it and the forested slopes of the mountains rising steeply on both sides.
A Velingrad map poster reflects this linear form. Streets follow the river and valley, with side roads branching up the slopes, and parks and spa grounds appear as green spaces within the built-up area. The mountains frame the town closely, giving the map a strong sense of enclosure.
The town was created in 1948 by joining the villages of Ladzhene, Kamenitsa and Chepino, and it is known for its many mineral springs, which have made it one of Bulgaria's best-known spa resorts. The Kleptuza karst spring, with its small lakes and park, is one of its most visited sights.
