Waalwijk is part of the Langstraat, a line of towns that grew along a long road across the north of North Brabant. From above, the town stretches east to west, following that historic ribbon, with newer neighbourhoods and business parks spreading to the north and south. The Bergsche Maas runs a short distance to the north.
The town is known for its leather and shoe industry, which shaped the Langstraat for centuries. The Netherlands Leather and Shoe Museum is in Waalwijk, and the town is also home to the football club RKC Waalwijk. Large industrial and logistics areas appear on the map as broad blocks near the motorway.
