Wanju is a county in North Jeolla that almost completely surrounds the city of Jeonju. On a map it forms a wide ring of hills and valleys around the city, which gives it an unusual shape: dense urban streets in the middle, and a spread of rural townships, reservoirs and forested ridges all around.
To the south-west rises Moaksan, a mountain with a well-known Buddhist temple. To the east, the land climbs towards Daedunsan, whose rocky peaks and suspension bridge draw many hikers. Between the mountains, rivers and streams run through narrow farming valleys, and small towns grow up where the valleys meet.
A Wanju map poster can be framed around one of its townships, such as the newer residential and industrial areas at Bongdong and Samnye, or pulled back to show how the county encircles Jeonju. In either case, the print shows contour-shaped roads and scattered settlements rather than a single tight grid.
