Wednesbury lies in the Black Country, northwest of Birmingham, in the borough of Sandwell. Its name is usually traced back to the Anglo-Saxon god Woden, and its oldest church stands on a hill above the town centre, the highest point in the area.
From above, Wednesbury is typical of the industrial Midlands: a tight town centre, rows of terraced streets, old canal lines and railway routes, and large former industrial sites now replaced by retail parks. The M6 motorway passes close by, and the Midland Metro tram runs through the town.
