Williamnagar is the headquarters of East Garo Hills district in Meghalaya, in the northeast of India. It sits in the valley of the Simsang River, and from above the town is shaped by water and slopes: a winding river, with streets and buildings spread along its banks and climbing the surrounding hills.
The town was named after Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya. As a district centre, it has government offices, schools and markets, with the main roads following the contours of the land rather than a regular grid.
