Winter Gardens is a census-designated community in San Diego County, lying east of Santee and close to Lakeside. Its map mixes two kinds of pattern: fairly regular residential streets on the lower ground, and curving roads that climb and bend around the rocky hills rising at the edges. The terrain is legible from the streets alone.
Like much of inland San Diego County, the area sits among dry hills and chaparral, and development stops where slopes become too steep. On the map this creates sharp boundaries between dense residential blocks and open, empty ground, which gives the community a distinct outline.
