Wittlich lies at the southern edge of the Eifel, in a broad basin where the Lieser river flows towards the Mosel. The old town is small and tightly packed. Its streets lead to a central market square and are surrounded by a ring of later development. Newer residential streets and commercial areas spread out across the basin, with wooded hills rising around it.
The town is known for the Säubrennerkirmes, a large annual fair whose name refers to a local legend about roasting pigs. The Baroque town hall and the parish church of St. Markus give the historic centre its character. Wittlich is also a regional hub, well connected by motorway and road.
