Wutan is a town in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country that rolls away from the Yangtze. The map is shaped by relief. Building concentrates where the ground allows, and roads find their way between rises in long curves instead of straight lines.
Around the town the landscape is agricultural and finely divided, with small fields, ponds and hamlets spread along the lanes. This kind of settlement pattern repeats across the Sichuan Basin's eastern edge, but each town's outline is its own, set by the particular shape of its hills.
