Xaçmaz lies on the flat coastal lowland of northern Azerbaijan, a short distance inland from the Caspian Sea. From above it looks calm and regular. The blocks are mostly rectangular, the roads run fairly straight, and the town is edged by a patchwork of orchards and fields.
The railway from Baku to the Russian border passes through Xaçmaz, and the station area forms a clear line along one side of the town. The district is known for its apples and other fruit. In summer, people from the capital travel north to the forests and beaches around Nabran on the nearby coast.
