Xam Nua, also written Sam Neua, is the capital of Houaphan province in northeastern Laos. It lies in a narrow valley, and on a map the town follows the course of the Nam Xam river, which runs through the centre. Streets and neighbourhoods extend along both banks, while steep ridges on either side keep the settled area long and narrow.
The province played a central role in modern Lao history. Nearby, in the limestone caves of Vieng Xai, the leadership of the Pathet Lao sheltered during years of bombing, and the caves are now visited as a historic site. Xam Nua itself is a common starting point for those visits.
