Xiangcheng is the seat of Xiangyun County, in Yunnan's Dali prefecture. It sits on a highland basin east of the lakes and mountains around Dali. On a map, the town occupies the flat floor of the basin. Its streets spread across the level ground, and the surrounding hills rise all around.
The older part of the town has a closer street pattern, while newer districts extend it with wider roads and larger blocks. Farmland fills much of the rest of the basin. Its field boundaries give the plain a fine texture, and roads and rail lines cross it towards Dali in the west and Kunming in the east.
