Xindian is a town in northern Jiangsu, on the broad and almost perfectly flat plain that covers much of this part of eastern China. On the map, the town is a compact area of streets, and around it long straight roads and field boundaries stretch in every direction, broken only by watercourses and small villages.
Northern Jiangsu has been farmed intensively for a very long time. Irrigation channels and drainage ditches divide the land into regular plots. Small towns like Xindian act as local centres for trade and services, and they are connected to larger county towns by roads that run straight across the plain.
