Xinglong lies in the hilly southeast of Gansu Province, in the rugged country where the loess uplands meet the western ranges of the Qinling. In terrain like this, settlements follow the valleys, and on the map the town stretches along lower ground with steep slopes rising on both sides.
The result is a narrow, elongated street pattern. A main road follows the valley floor, smaller lanes branch off where the land allows, and the surrounding hills are cut by switchback tracks and terraced fields.
