Yabayo lies in the Bas-Sassandra District of southwestern Ivory Coast, an area of farming and forest. It is a modest town, and from above it appears as a cluster of streets gathered around a main road, with houses thinning out quickly into cultivated land.
This part of the country is at the heart of Ivory Coast's cocoa belt, and the landscape around towns like Yabayo is largely made up of smallholder plots, remaining forest and footpaths. On a map the fields look like an irregular mosaic around the more regular town blocks.
