Yan Besar lies on the coast of Kedah in northwest Peninsular Malaysia, the main town of Yan district. It sits in a narrow band of lowland between Gunung Jerai, the tall isolated mountain that dominates this stretch of coast, and the shallow waters of the Strait of Malacca. On a map the town is compact, its streets gathered along a few main roads.
The surrounding landscape is agricultural, with rice paddies and village settlements covering the flat ground and small rivers flowing from the mountain to the sea.
