Yaowan is a town in the north of Jiangsu province, in the Xuzhou area. It grew as a stopping point on the Grand Canal, the long waterway that once carried grain and goods between southern and northern China. On a map, the canal is the defining line, and the older part of town lies close beside it.
The historic streets form a compact, irregular pattern near the water, in contrast to the straighter roads and newer blocks added around them.
