Yershov lies in the Trans-Volga steppe of Saratov Oblast, on the flat, open land east of the river. It is primarily a railway town, and the map makes that clear. Rail lines cross the area with long straight tracks and sidings, and the town's regular grid of streets is laid out beside them.
Beyond the edge of town, the steppe opens up into wide fields divided by straight boundaries and shelterbelts of trees. Small rivers and ponds provide the only curves in an otherwise ruled landscape. The roads leave town in long lines toward neighbouring districts.
